In a brazen betrayal of California’s voters, Governor Gavin Newsom has spearheaded a campaign to spend over $250 million in taxpayer funds to overturn a law that two-thirds of Californians approved through ballot initiatives in 2008 and 2010.
California’s independent redistricting commission was created to ensure fairness, with a balanced panel of five Democrats, five Republicans, and four independents tasked with drawing district lines supposedly without partisan bias. They are forbidden from discussing districting outside of open public sessions following the US Census results every ten years.
Recent polling confirms that this commission still enjoys robust support, with two-thirds of Californians favoring its independent, nonpartisan approach to redistricting.
On August 21, 2025, Newsom signed the contentious redistricting package, including Assembly Constitutional Amendment 8 and Senate Bill 280. This package, dubbed the “Election Rigging Response Act,” redraws congressional maps to favor Democrats, robbing five Republican-held seats in the 2026 midterms. The plan hinges on a scheduled November 4, 2025, special election, where voters will decide on deceptive Proposition 50, a measure that would suspend the independent commission’s maps for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections, replacing voter-approved maps with ones solely drawn by Democratic lawmakers and DNC Attorney’s to secure a near-total grip on California’s congressional delegation.
Newsom initially framed this as a defensive move to counter Republican-led redistricting in Texas, a so-called “Texas trigger” that would only activate California’s new maps if Texas or other GOP-led states redrew their districts mid-decade.
Steve Hilton revealed, this critical language was quietly removed at the last minute. Hilton stated, “They pulled out language last minute that stated that the law would only be in effect if Texas redistricted as a Texas trigger,” exposing the Democrats’ intent to push forward regardless of Texas’s actions.
A Betrayal of People’s Will
With Democrats already holding 43 of 52 U.S. House seats (82% control) despite comprising only 45% of registered voters, this move could push their dominance to 94%, effectively silencing the state’s diverse electorate!
Newsom’s rhetoric focuses solely on a partisan tug-of-war with Republicans, while ignoring the state’s 22% independent voters. Meanwhile, Republicans, already underrepresented with just 17% of congressional seats despite Trump garnering 38% of the state’s vote in 2024, face further marginalization.
Newsom’s campaign raised $6.2 million in just seven days including from donors outside the state—signaling a well-funded push to deceive voters.
Republican lawmakers filed a lawsuit with the California Supreme Court on August 19, 2025, charging that Democrats flouted a critical transparency mandate requiring legislation to be publicly available for 30 days before a vote. The redistricting bills were rammed through on August 18, 2025, via a deceptive “gut-and-amend” maneuver, repurposing unrelated bills (Assembly Bill 604 and Senate Bill 280, introduced in February) with last-minute redistricting language. This rushed, opaque process, Republicans argue, robbed Californians of their right to scrutinize a proposal that threatens to dismantle the voter-approved Citizens Redistricting Commission, exposing Newsom’s tactics as a deliberate end-run around the transparency and accountability demanded by the state constitution.
A formidable opposition, led by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Munger Jr., and former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is rallying to defeat Proposition 50, with Republican Assemblyman James Gallagher slamming its lack of transparency as “#Gavinmandering.” Steve Hilton, the sole 2026 gubernatorial candidate driving organized resistance, is suing Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta while leading a media blitz. Backed by Protect Voters First and Stop Sacramento’s Power Grab, Republicans and independents are mobilizing to galvanize voters for the November 4, 2025, showdown.
“The radicals in Sacramento, in their attempt to silence Californians may have unwittingly ignited a revolution, awakening and uniting a supermajority of voters—Republicans, independents, and even disillusioned Democrats—who are fed up with the Democratic Party’s tyrannical grip.” —Christine Reagan, National Grassroots and Communications Director
