Radio Show Recap: Reclaim San Diego Tackles California’s Family Policy Battles
On the May 17, 2025, episode of Reclaim San Diego Radio, hosts Dr. Gary Cass and Christine Reagan, Director of Act for America, welcomed Greg Burt, Vice President of the California Family Council, to discuss pressing family policy issues in California. The 60-minute show, focused on the state’s legislative threats to parental rights, religious liberty, and child safety, offered listeners a deep dive into current bills and actionable steps to fight back. The conversation highlighted the Council’s role as a leading advocate for conservative values, their past efforts, and the urgent battles ahead.
Burt, with a decade of experience at the state Capitol, detailed the California Family Council’s fight against bills undermining traditional values. A major focus was AB 727, which mandates that all public and Christian college student IDs include the Trevor Project’s suicide hotline—a number tied to an LGBTQ advocacy group pushing gender fluidity. Burt warned, “This bill sends vulnerable kids to Trevor Space, a social media site where 13-year-olds can join clubs like ‘Our Dads Suck’ or ‘Lovesick Lesbians,’ mixing with unvetted adults—it’s grooming, plain and simple.” He revealed how he tested the platform by posing as a 13-year-old, gaining immediate access to these groups, exposing the risks of predation and parental alienation.
Christine Reagan, Director of Act for America, expressed deep concerns about the dangers of the Trevor Project’s suicide hotline being mandated on student IDs through California’s AB 727 bill. She highlighted the risks to vulnerable children, particularly those struggling with gender confusion, who need genuine mental health support rather than ideological affirmation.
Reagan stated, “I just can’t get over this gross abuse—to take a suicide hotline and put it on there when this community has a very high suicide rate. They’re very vulnerable. They need a legitimate place to fall on that’s going to really counsel and treat them, not affirm them into a lifestyle that makes them even more vulnerable to suicide.” She emphasized the hotline’s 20% higher suicide risk for trans or gender-confused children compared to those with same-sex attraction, arguing that the Trevor Project’s approach exacerbates their struggles by directing them to affirming resources rather than professional therapy.
She further warned, “These environments that we throw these kids into in this confusion, they’re interrupting a natural process… We don’t even give them the space to figure out, ‘I might not fit the super feminine or super masculine bill,’ and work through it naturally.” Reagan underscored the hotline’s role in isolating children from their parents, pushing them toward unvetted online spaces like Trevor Space, which she and Greg Burt criticized as a grooming risk due to its lack of age verification and exposure to potentially predatory adults.
Reagan stated, “Let’s just look at California State statutes, because we’re dealing with this with porn in the schools as well, that any time an adult, someone over the age of 18, has any conversation whatsoever that has sexual content to it can be charged criminally for grooming… There’s just all these different little statutes based on the nuances of what occurs between them, whether it’s materials, conversations, contact.” She pointed out that Trevor Space, advertised for 13- to 24-year-olds, facilitates such interactions through clubs like “Lovesick Lesbians” and “Gender Fluid Support Club,” where sexualized conversations occur without oversight, exposing minors to potential exploitation by adults in a way that violates California’s anti-grooming laws.
The discussion also tackled AB 379, a bill addressing sex trafficking. Initially weakened by the Public Safety Committee to reduce penalties for soliciting 16- and 17-year-olds, the bill was strengthened after grassroots pressure, passing 74-0 with felony charges for buyers over three years older than the minor. Burt noted the broader issue: “The state’s soft on trafficking—buying a person for sex should be shameful, but the law doesn’t reflect that.”
VICTORY! Christine Reagan, Director of Act for America, expressed gratitude to listeners for their activism in supporting AB 379, a bill addressing sex trafficking in California. The bill, which passed that morning with a 74-0 vote, included felony charges for buyers soliciting 16- and 17-year-olds, a provision strengthened by grassroots efforts.
Reagan stated, “I want to thank you for that because if you hadn’t jumped in, we really were at a place where we had no means to negotiate. Our power was being taken from us quickly on this issue. But you set it straight, it was you. The grassroots must never believed that your voice doesn’t count.” She credited the success to 132,821 emails, phone calls, and social media posts from listeners, emphasizing their critical role in ensuring the bill protected minors effectively, even in a challenging legislative environment.
Cass stated, “They don’t want any restrictions on any sexual behavior by anybody, anytime, anyplace, any age, because they’re just completely dirtbags. And so they see any restriction on these 16- and 17-year-olds as a restriction… Because of their inability to restrain themselves, they have no scruples about children.”
Dr. Cass and Reagan emphasized the need for conservative activism, reflecting on the Council’s 2024 parental notification petition, which fell short but showed their resolve. They urged listeners to join the fight at reclaimsandiego.com, where upcoming video podcasts and events, like their monthly movie matinee, aim to build community.
Burt’s insights, paired with the hosts’ call to “reclaim San Diego’s 145-year conservative heritage,” signal a show unafraid to confront controversial issues head-on, arming listeners with tools to protect families and values in a challenging political landscape.
